Beached sperm whale to be euthanized

beachedsperm2MADEIRA BEACH — Officials have decided they will give a beached sperm whale sitting off the shore near John’s Pass a sedative before euthanizing it.  “The animal is in extremely poor body condition, listed as emaciated, prior to death at this stage,” said Dr. Mike Walsh, University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. “The fact that it came to shore basically means it is going to die on its own.”   Walsh said the goal is a humane approach to death rather than have the animal suffer over a number of days.   “Our current course is we are waiting for tide to go down to approach the animal,” said Walsh. “The animal will be given a sedative so it’s no longer in pain, and then we will euthanize the animal.”   Kevin Baxter with the FWC said the sperm whale is about 30 to 35 feet in length and is 20 yards from the shore.….MORE

About Indian Rocks Bridge

We have a HUGE responsibility to protect our children and their futures. Our Gulf of Mexico has nearly been destroyed by the Deep-water Horizon catastrophe and many families here will never recover. Paradise lost, so it goes. I’m doing my best to apolitically educate anyone that cares about the impact on our environment by technology and “for-profit” progress. We forget, too frequently that we SHARE this planet with millions of other life-forms and as the most “powerful” species, we must be more cognizant of our greed versus the well-being of our planet. Thanks again for visiting and please check back often. -Gregg
